Lifespan: 35 - 50 years
Diet: Eggs, insects, terrestrial worms, leaves, roots and tubers, wood, bark or stems, fruit, nectar, flowers, sap, fungus, detritus
Habitat: Primary rainforest, secondary fainforest, lowland swamps, dipterocarp forests
Distribution: Borneo

They are closely related to humans, their thoughtfulness and intelligence revealed in all that they do. Orangutans are an endangered species, they have long been hunted by poachers and now are additionally at risk due to the loss of much of their rainforest home. Orangutan males and essentially loners, travelling amongst the rainforest, frequently calling out in order to keep out of each others way. This means that they are exceptionally vulnerable to deforestation and rainforest fragmentation, as they need vast areas of tropical forest to survive. Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).
