Trio of Mallard ducklings snuggled together on a sunny log, warming up after feeding on an abundance on pond weed. Mallards are the ancestor of most of todays breeds of domestic duck. Mallards, also known as Wild Ducks, live in wetlands throughout temperate and subtropical areas of the Americas, Europe, Asia and North Africa. Mallard males have a glossy green head whilst females have simpler brown-speckled plumage. Mallards occasionally interbreed with a number of closely related duck breeds and unusually, these produce offspring that are also able to breed.
