When inland, they prefer bodies of open water such as lakes, wide rivers or reservoirs surrounded by trees, bushes or reef beds for nesting. In marine environments they prefer sheltered coastlines, estuaries, deltas or mangrove swamps with cliffs or inlets suitable for nest building. Great Cormorants are a successful species with their numbers increasing worldwide due to their varied habitat and wide range of diet.
