Borneo Elephant grazing in the rainforest

Borneo Elephant Cow (female), taken in the early evening light, within the Borneo rainforest. Gentle pink tones of the early setting sun blend into her grey colouring. Borneo Elephants are found in northeastern Borneo. Early in the 18th century, the ruling Sultan of Sulu released captive elephants into the rain forests of Borneo which was believed to be the original source of the current population. Now however, there is DNA evidence that the Borneo elephants may have developed separately from their Asian cousins for up to 300,000 years and are therefore a distinct subspecies.
